Joe Biden calls for tripling of tariffs on Chinese steel

US President Joe Biden is pushing for tariffs to triple on Chinese steel and aluminum, as he seeks to boost union support in the swing state of Pennsylvania.

In a meeting with United Steelworkers union members in Pittsburgh on Wednesday, Biden will call on trade representative Katherine Tai to triple the tariff on the imports from the current average of 7.5 per cent.

Biden’s campaign is trying to shore up support among union workers ahead of November’s US presidential election, in which Pennsylvania could play a decisive role.

So much for belief in free trade in the most capitalist country in the world.

Freedom is interpreted only as freedom for the US to do whatever it likes.

 @BrainyFilibusterForward from California disagreed…2wks2W

Free trade works perfectly in the absence of hostile state actors subsidizing the practice of dumping to destroy productive capacity in other nations.

 @PuzzledFrogSocialist from California disagreed…2wks2W

Capitalism was never about morals or ethics. It was supposed to be a superior system in terms of performance.

Now it turns out it was all BS since America is going full on dirigism and central planning, because otherwise the Chinese "cheat". They don't "cheat", they just use a different system that, it seems, has always been superior.

 @Minarchist-08Libertarian from Washington disagreed…2wks2W

Socialism's always been superior, eh? Wow! You wouldn't have guessed it, what with the hundreds of millions of people slaughtered by Joseph Stalin, and the hundreds of million of people who starved to death in the USSR since without property rights, no one had any incentive to work! You sure wouldn't think it, when you consider that it has a proven track record of making everything worse and nothing better! My mind is blown, moral man that I am, with your wisdom and insight. Please go ahead and enlighten me some more!

 @AmusedDolphinPatriot from Florida commented…2wks2W

CCP China is dumping its goods all over the world. Biden is right to propose this. Trump wants to slap a huge tariff on ALL China made stuff. And pretty soon Europe will as well or the few jobs they still have will be wiped out.

When you have a rogue state like China acting in bad faith 100% of the time, extreme measures are warranted

 @CivilLibertiesClamLibertarianfrom Maine commented…2wks2W

“We must invest in American manufacturing, but we also have to protect those investments and those workers from unfair exports associated with China’s industrial overcapacity,”

Next time when another country does it and on American imports / products, remember this America.

Don't peddle globalization when you are peddling protectionist policies for the last 4 years. You are breeding inefficiencies in your industries and one day it will go bust.

 @TalentedBearPeace and Freedom from Pennsylvania disagreed…2wks2W

tell that to the Chinese unfair competitors and their massive state subsidies and dumping on world market... the US is the wrong adress for your words

 @ISIDEWITHasked…2wks2W

Should political goals influence trade policies, especially if it might affect international relationships?

 @Minarchist-08Libertarian from Washington commented…2wks2W

The whole notion that America is losing jobs due to insufficient tariffs is stupid. In a free trade, each side gives up one thing it wants less in return for something it wants more – both sides benefit. Otherwise, why would they trade at all? If there was a winner or a loser in international trade, why does the alleged "loser" continue trading? Because both sides are actually winners.

Trump falls $75million Behind Joe Biden In Money Race As Donor Base Shrinks

Donald Trump has raised $75mn less for his presidential bid than Joe Biden and has 270,000 fewer unique donors now than at the same stage of his run for the White House four years ago.

The findings, from a Financial Times analysis of federal campaign data, raise new questions about how the former president’s shrunken base will sustain him through costly court cases and what is expected to be the most expensive presidential race ever.

The Trump campaign and affiliated political action committees have attracted roughly 900,000 donors from July 2023 through the first quarter of 2024, compare…  Read more

How do you feel about the importance of money in determining the outcome of presidential elections?

 @9LLVJN8 from North Carolina commented…2wks2W

I'm not too sure. Money is an important incentive for campaining and gaining support.

What are your thoughts on the role of large donations vs. small individual contributions in shaping a political campaign?

 @ISIDEWITHasked…2wks2W

Should there be a limit on how much money a candidate can raise or spend on their campaign, and why?

 @9LLVV2J from North Carolina commented…2wks2W

I believe there should be a cap to this as one should not win based on money but rather the acceptance of their beliefs and morals on the direction of the country.

 @CulturedSwanSocialist from Minnesota commented…2wks2W

If anything this article epitomizes the decline in US democracy, with the US Supreme Court particularly to blame with their ill-thought through decision in the Citizen United case. Presidential elections, to a certain degree, can be rightly said to be bought.

Google employees arrested while protesting the company's $1.2B contract with Israel

Google employees who occupied the California office of Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian for more than eight hours to demand the company stop doing business with Israel were arrested late Tuesday.

The employees broadcast their protest on a “notech4apartheid’ Twitch livestream. The video showed they given the opportunity to leave voluntarily, and then arrested by police after refusing to do so.

In the stream, a man is seen approaching the protesters to notify them that they were put on administrative leave and asking them to leave.

“It’s getting kinda late,” the man…  Read more

Ok, not on point, but when did cops start wearing surgical gloves all the time?

I mean when I was younger this just wasn't a thing...at all.

 @BipartisanSavannahWorking Family from Washington D.C. agreed…2wks2W

They're like irrationally scared of accidentally getting a flake of fentanyl on their skin. From what I've heard there's no way for there to be danger in it happening, but they're so worked up that they faint when it happens. Seriously weird stuff.

 @L3gislatorViperLibertarian from Tennessee agreed…2wks2W

Ahhh. Fentanyl. Got it.

But can't it get on the glove and then you accidentally touch your nose or mouth and get some inside even if you have gloves?

Peacefully protesting an issue you feel is important should never result in your persecution, arrest or firing.

think they can dictate company policy.

I wish I had their sense of entitlement.

If this was a protest against Hezbollah in Beirut or Hamas in Gaza, they'd have been running for their lives.

 @SincereSausageRepublican from Missouri commented…2wks2W

Wow, so occupying the CEO’s office and attempting to bully him into halting a project for Israel at a company founded by two Jewish men was not a successful strategy?

Color me shocked.

Republican Arizona Senate Candidate Tells Voters To Strap On A Gun

Arizona GOP Senate hopeful Kari Lake told supporters they can "strap on a Glock" to be prepared for the intensity of the 2024 campaign and urged military and law enforcement veterans to be "ready," as her race heats up in a key battleground state.

“We need to send people to Washington, D.C., that the swamp does not want there,” Lake said toward the end of a Sunday speech to a crowd of Arizonans in Mohave County. “And I can think of a couple people they don’t want there. First on that list is Donald J. Trump; second is Kari Lake.”

Asian ACLU employee complains to black boss about abusive work environment. Is fired for being "racist."

During her five years as a lawyer for the American Civil Liberties Union, she was an unsparing critic of her superiors, known for sending long, blistering emails to human resources complaining about what she described as a hostile workplace.

She considered herself a whistle blower and advocate for other women in the office, drawing unflattering attention to an environment she said was rife with sexism, burdened by unmanageable workloads and stymied by a fear-based culture.

Then the tables turned, and Ms. Oh was the one slapped with an accusation of serious misconduct. The A.C.L.U. said her comp…  Read more

Is expressing fear or discomfort around superiors inherently racist, or can it purely reflect personal or professional grievances?

Does the fight for workplace equality justify firing employees for complaints that could be perceived as racially insensitive, even if unintended?

50,000 Russian Soldiers Confirmed Dead In Ukraine War

Russia's military death toll in Ukraine has now passed the 50,000 mark, the BBC can confirm.

In the second 12 months on the front line - as Moscow pushed its so-called meat grinder strategy - we found the body count was nearly 25% higher than in the first year.

BBC Russian, independent media group Mediazona and volunteers have been counting deaths since February 2022.

New graves in cemeteries helped provide the names of many soldiers.

Our teams also combed through open-source information from official reports, newspapers and social media.

More than 27,300 Russian soldiers died in the second…  Read more

I think you made a mistake, the last count was more than 400,000.

 @MereLemurDemocratfrom Illinois agreed…2wks2W

The 400k includes those lost for the military, including the severly wounded, afaik.

Also, the 50k are only the confirmed deaths, so the real number is of course multiple times higher.

 @ChamoisBenPatriotfrom Maine commented…2wks2W

400k is "casualties" — dead AND wounded.

These 50k are people who have been identified and confirmed dead, one by one.

 @ResoluteHouseOfRepsWorking Family from Oklahoma commented…2wks2W

If you believe the Ukrainian figure of 31k dead I have a bridge here to sell you & it's very cheap.

 @Minarchist-08Libertarian from Washington commented…2wks2W

When we give money to Ukraine (who has ZERO chance of winning) this is what we're doing. We are prolonging carnage and human suffering. If you support that, you have to ask yourself why. Why do you want to make a hopeless foreign war seven thousand miles away longer, when that means more deaths and horrific casualties?

 @TenaciousPartisanForward from Georgia commented…2wks2W

That's way more than I would have guessed. Consider that the US lost about 7,000 troops during the entirety of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, and those conflicts spanned the better part of a decade. The Russian invasion of Ukraine has only lasted a bit over 2 years.

4 Children Killed In Israel Bombing Of Maghazi refugee camp

Eleven people, including children, have been killed in an Israeli air attack on the Maghazi refugee camp in central Gaza as Israel continues its bombardment of the Palestinian territory.

Seven people were reported killed, including four children, in an Israeli jet attack on a house in the Yabna refugee camp in Rafah.

The United Nations, United States and Palestinian rights groups join growing condemnation of Israeli settler attacks on Palestinians in the occupied West Bank.
