Maslow's hierarchy of need demonstrates that, until our basic needs are met, we cannot sustain higher levels of thought that include citizenship and empathy. Establishing a safe, just society is what will transform public policy, because it will transform us from survivors to fellow-citizens.

What our government lacks is empathy and compassion. Having empathy and compassion towards one another will help parties compromise and will increase the work that needs to be done.
