Police in America started as slave hunters and morphed into private forces for corporations until around the late 1880s when we saw our first government funded police force. Back then police were seen as thugs who abuse their power, and today even though they are still thugs who abuse their power (see literally any DOJ report on any cities police, Minneapolis is a good one) our perspective has somehow changed. this can be attributed to copaganda in our media, portraying cops as our only protection against a world where criminals get to roam the world doing all the crimes. But we literally already live in that world. Cops dont prevent crime, they punish those who commit them severely. Ask yourself how much experience with the police and their systems you actually have. Have you ever been convicted of a crime? Hell have you ever even been arrested? You probably dont know the first thing about these systems and whether or not they actually help to reduce crime. Your only experience with these institutions are on TV, TV shows that are reviewed by police departments in order to only show the "good". In conclusion, we need to abolish prisons and policing and move our resources into uplifting high crime communities, because the number 1 indication of crime is wealth.
