Not everyone wants or is suited to go to a four year college. If the government paid for this it would be biased against those that do not want to go to a four year college or aren't suited to this type of education. Giving someone something without having some skin in the game is generally ineffective - education is no different. Colleges and universities should not cost so much. Student loan interest rates should be only enough to cover the administrative costs of the loan. An idea as a way to have the federal/state government pay for a portion of people's education, whether a four year college or a trade school, would be to have them serve their country in some manner - work in the national parks, pick up trash, build trails, etc. The amount of time they put in could be put towards payment.
