Once those programs are in place and operational, it will become apparent how much funding can be diverted by the reduction in calls requiring police response. Reduction in calls should correspond to a reduction in the needed police force, which can be addressed by not replacing officers as they leave or retire. Theoretically, through attrition, less funds would be needed for police. Police also need more extensive training, particularly in de-escalation.
