America Made a Huge Bet on Sports Gambling. The Backlash Is Here.

American sports spent more than a century keeping gambling as far away as possible, in the name of preserving competitive purity and repelling scandal and corruption.

Now, less than six years after the Supreme Court opened the door for states to embrace legal sports betting, major U.S. leagues are already confronting the darker sides of sports betting with alarming frequency. And at the heart of the problems is the population whose ability to bet on sports is the most severely curbed: the athletes themselves.

The past two weeks alone have seen players across the major professional and college…  Read more

Can the spirit of competitive sports coexist with the growing presence of gambling, or are they fundamentally at odds?

 @PassionateD3fenceDemocrat from Florida commented…1mo1MO

What I hate is that sports coverage (radio and TV) has become gambling coverage. They even do in-game updates of the odds! As someone who does not bet, it distracts from my enjoyment of the game.

I don't drink beer, but sit through the plethora of beer commercials. We're all victims, but we all have choices.

 @SorePonyNo Labels from Pennsylvania commented…1mo1MO

Gee, this is shocking. I thought widespread gambling would be great for society.

 @DreadfulButterflyLibertarian from California agreed…1mo1MO

I think it's assumed that OK-ing any vice, not matter what it is, will have some negative effects. But the rationales for approving (and taxing) it are:

a. People are going to do it anyway. Or, as someone once said, you can't legislate morality.

b. The positive effects, and personal responsibility, are at least equal to the negative effects. For example, of a state runs a lottery (called a "tax on the poor") and uses the proceeds to provide transportation for seniors' medical care, is that justified? I dunno, but it is a reasonable argument.

 @WorriedHedgehogSocialist from California commented…1mo1MO

Gambling is no less dangerous than drugs. It is a shame that it is allowed, and even advertised. This fact speaks to what depths we have reached, caused by the most ordinary greed.

Russia Publishes Evidence Linking Moscow Terrorists To Ukrainian Nationalists

The suspects in last week’s Moscow terrorist attack were linked to Ukrainian nationalists, the Russian Investigative Committee stated on Thursday, citing preliminary findings. The perpetrators had received “significant sums of money” from Ukraine, the law enforcement agency said.

The investigators have obtained “substantiated evidence” that the suspected assailants received funding from Ukraine in the form of cryptocurrency, which was then used to prepare the terrorist attack, the statement read.

Law enforcement officers also identified and detained another suspect who was allegedly involved in financing the attack, the Investigative Committee said, without identifying the individual.

RFK Jr.'s VP Calls IVF ‘one of the biggest lies being told about women’s health’

Robert F. Kennedy Jr.'s running mate has been a harsh critic of in vitro fertilization, while funding alternative research on extending women’s reproductive years.

Nicole Shanahan has for years denounced IVF — calling it “one of the biggest lies that’s being told about women’s health today.”

At the same time, she has also been a vocal proponent of and financial backer for unconventional research into the possibility of helping women having children into their 50s and exploring no-cost interventions to help women conceive, such as exposure to sunlight.…  Read more

“I’m not sure that there has been a really thorough mitochondrial respiration study on the effects of two hours of morning sunlight on reproductive health. I would love to fund something like that,” Shanahan said to a 2023 panel with the National Academy of Medicine, a group to which she had previously donated $100 million.The statement was met with chuckles, “Yeah, let’s do it,” she added. “I just have an intuition that could be interesting and maybe work.”

 @Activi5tLukeNo Labels from Tennessee commented…1mo1MO

You are being disingenuous.

Finding ways to protect & promote fertility so IVF is not necessary is the goal.

IVF is incredibly costly, invasive & often unsuccessful.

It is a tortuous journey for most women. We should be researching ways to protect & promote fertility.

 @CommittedPorpoiseWorking Familyfrom Wisconsin agreed…1mo1MO

As a warrior mama who conceived through IVF, I can tell you it is an arduous journey that is like mortgaging a house.

Interestingly, aspirin increases live birth rates and isn’t or wasn’t back then part of the IVF protocols. Why? Because it is dirt cheap & available OTC.

Melatonin, a potent free radical scavenger which improves follicle/egg quality is often missing from IVF protocols. Why? Because Big Pharma can’t charge thousands of dollars for it.

Our health system has been hijacked by Big Pharma & wanna be mamas pay the price. Literally.

Russia Will Shoot Down F-16s In Ukraine

Russia has no designs on any NATO country and will not attack Poland, the Baltic states or the Czech Republic but if the West supplies F-16 fighters to Ukraine then they will be shot down by Russian forces, President Vladimir Putin said late on Wednesday.

Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 has triggered the deepest crisis in Russia's relations with the West since the 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis.

Speaking to Russian air force pilots, Putin said the U.S.-led military alliance had expanded eastwards towards Russia since the 1991 fall of the Soviet Union but that Moscow had no…  Read more

Washington State Offers Cash To Report Hate Speech Via A 24/7 Hotline

Washington will establish a nonpolice hotline to assist people who have been targeted by hate crimes and bias incidents, state lawmakers decided this week, passing a new version of a bill that failed to advance last year.

Senate Bill 5427, sponsored by Sen. Javier Valdez, D-Seattle, among others, directs the state Attorney General’s Office to create a hotline serving at least three Washington counties by 2025 and all counties by 2027.

The bill says the hotline should be staffed during business hours. It says call takers should provide victims with information, refer them to culturally com…  Read more

Should individuals be financially incentivized to report hate speech, or could this approach lead to unintended consequences?

 @PollingPlaceDaveLibertarian from Georgia answered…1mo1MO

Of course it's taxpayer money, so citizens are funding their own censorship and subjugation.

 @DelegateToucanMountain from North Carolina commented…1mo1MO

Does that include hate speech and bias against Whites? If so, their state fund will run out of money almost immediately. Or do they just hang up on you if the hate is directed against Whites?

How might the promise of anonymity affect people's willingness to report hate speech, and do you think this is beneficial or problematic?

South Korean Companies Offer Workers $75K To Have Babies

Korean construction group Booyoung is offering workers a $75,000 bonus for each baby they produce, one of many eye-catching incentives on offer as politicians and companies grapple with the country’s demographic crisis.

“If Korea’s birth rate remains low, the country will face extinction,” Booyoung chair Lee Joong-keun told employees last month.

South Korea’s total fertility rate — the average number of children a woman is expected to give birth to in her lifetime — fell from 0.78 in 2022 to 0.72 in 2023, according to government figures. It is projected…  Read more

South Korea goes pro-natalist. With a fertility rate of 0.68 in 2024 they need to get moving. This should be priority no. 1 for the whole society and no cost should be too great. Most Western countries are heading toward South Korean birth rates so we need to get on it too.

Why children aren’t being had in Asian countries is entirely different than why they aren’t in Europe or America. If you applied this strategy in America you’d have the wrong people having kids for the wrong reasons. There’s no one size fits all solution to this.

Texas Governor Orders Colleges to Revise Free Speech Policies Amid Israel-Hamas Conflict Debates

In response to the escalating tensions among Texas college students over the Israel-Hamas war, Governor Greg Abbott has taken a decisive step by ordering colleges to revise their free speech policies. This move comes as universities across the state, and indeed the nation, find themselves at the center of heated debates and protests concerning the conflict. The governor's directive aims to ensure that campuses remain arenas for open dialogue and intellectual debate, even on contentious issues such as the Israel-Hamas conflict.

The Israel-Hamas war has not only dominated global headlines…  Read more
