I can see how an issue like abortion or marriage can be used to separate liberals/libertarians from conservatives since abortion allows and encourages sex with neither commitment, nor consequences and promotes the destabilization of society by disrupting the family unit.
But, what is inherently liberal in an issue like global warming? What is it that makes liberals and conservatives come down on opposite sides of this issue? Why shouldn't conservatives be in favor of conserving natural resources (which would require greater efficiency in using petroleum-based energy sources)?

Conservative politicians are funded by the fossil fuel industry, who have a vested interest in maintaining their dominance of the energy sector, which naturally means pretending fossil fuels don’t pose a major ecological threat.
