I would ask my friend to pay more attention to what goes on in the world outside them, especially when it pertains to companies with a long history of polluting the environment, like oil companies.

The concept of the "individual carbon footprint" was deliberately invented by oil companies to shift blame for environmental problems. You can push back on this by prioritizing system change over individual behavior change.

I would inspire my friend to stop leaving the lights on in their room when they aren't there or to turn off the water when brushing their teeth to preserve energy and water.

It would be to stop using unsustainable palm oils because it causes harm to the environment

I would advise the "friend" to recycle and sustain and conserve resources such a as water and electricity by turning them off when they aren't being used.
