Can embracing tradition in politics offer comfort or does it create barriers?

I'm not quite sure, I would probably need more information. Some traditional things can be comforting, but as people often vary in opinions and politics are quite divisive, I'm not sure whether or not politics and religion should be combined. It could go alright, or it could go horridly...

As far as Catholicism goes, as a Christian I'm sure there are some things Catholicism gets right, but as a Protestant, I feel like Catholicism is a tad bit heretical when it comes to praying to martyrs and angels and such. Granted, I don't know enough about Catholicism to form a sure opinion...
