Some people fleeing Syria are fleeing religious persecution and would qualify as people needing asylum because of the abuse they suffer in their homeland. Without a doubt, we should do whatever's in our power to help these people and without delay. However, there are some people who want to come into the United States to cause harm. So, for everyone else, I would say, yes. Extensive background checks and monitoring are necessary. But we need to be clear about what the standards are there, have a clearly defined plan of action in regard to this, and make sure that money isn't a key factor in keeping others out. Because if it is we're basically looking at poll tax 2.0
