The president should be directly elected using the contingent vote: Voters rank candidates, and if one candidate has a majority of the first-preference vote, that person is the winner. If no one has a majority, all but the top two are eliminated, and all ballots for lower-placed candidates are given to whichever of the top two candidates that is ranked higher on any given ballot. This ensures that a single candidate has a majority in the second round. If this isn't possible, I support abolishing the Electoral College and going with the first-past-the-post winner of the popular vote.
