Hydro accidents have caused far more damage and loss of life than nuclear accidents. Nuclear is cleaner, more efficient and safer than renewables. Renewables require the clearing of large amounts of land area in order to generate relatively small amounts of electricity.
Hydro is devastating to migratory marine life and can disrupt downstream communities that rely on the water, as seen in Iraq. It also results in significant methane emission as vegetation rots beteath the reservoir. In addition, there is the expense of having to routinely dredge the reservoir as sediment builds up.
Solar… Read more and wind require rare earth minerals and the panels and blades need to be replaced regularly which would mean a massive uptick in mining over what would be needed for nuclear. there is also the problem of disposing of large quantities of non-biodegradable solar panels and fiberglass blades. Both, but particularly windmills have been known to kill large numbers of birds, inculding some endangered species. And neither are reliable. Particularly in the late evening when power use spikes. Batteries are inefficient and come with their own environmental harm.
Nuclear plants produce a huge amount of electricity very cheaply and reliably with very little waste material and very little land required.
